This Guide is not designed to be a highly informative document. It is simply a list of the exact steps I have taken to get the described process to work. Please refer to the
Setup Notes for more clarification on numerous points.
TURN OFF USER ACCOUNT CONTROL
Click 'Start' --> Click 'Control Panel'
In the Left Column of Control Panel, Click 'Control Panel Home'
In the Search Box (Top right corner), type 'user account'
Select from the main panel, 'Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off'
Remove the tick from 'Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer' --> Click 'OK'
Accept the security warning if prompted and close the Control Panel
SET UP HARDWARE/DRIVERS
Insert the 'Bigpond' installation disk
If the Bigpond Setup screen appears, exit out of the setup completely
If the AutoPlay box appears, close it.
Plug the 'Bigpond' USB Device into a spare USB port
Select 'Locate and install driver software'
Select 'Dont search Online'
Select 'I don't have the disc. Show me other options'
Select 'Browse my computer for driver software'
Click the 'Browse' button and navigate to (select appropriate drive for your CDROM)
'e:\Drivers\MAXON\CHU628\32' --> Click 'OK'
Remove the tick from 'Include Subfolders' --> Click 'Next'
Click 'Close' when the Device has installed.
Repeat the last step as required (Usually three times in total. These are three different device components within the USB Dongle). If an error appears at any stage saying 'Device Driver Software was not successfully installed', dismiss it, then reboot immediately and continue exactly as detailed above for any further hardware devices found on reboot. The error seems to be unavoidable during the process.
Once all 'New Hardware Found' advices have been dealt with reboot again.
SET UP BIGPOND CONNECTION MANAGER SOFTWARE
Click 'Start' --> 'Computer'
Navigate to CDROM/DVDROM Drive (Do not double click the CDROM icon to start the standard bigpond setup)
Locate and Start the file called 'bwbcmwin32installer_2.7.3.msi' on the CDROM
(The connection manager software may be a later version on your CD, as version 2.8.13 has now been released. If you wish to use the later version and do not have it on your CD, follow this link to download it from the Bigpond Website.)
At the Welcome Screen --> Click 'Next'
Select 'I accept' on the Terms and Conditions --> Click 'Next'
Accept the default installation location --> Click 'Next'
Navigate to the Bigpond Connection Manager (Shortcut on Desktop) - DO NOT PRESS REGISTER
Hold down the 'SHIFT' and while holding click the 'OPTIONS' button in the connection manager
Select the 'Diagnosis' tab
Change 'Network APN' to 'telstra.datapack'
Select 'Signup has been completed for this device'
Click Apply --> Click 'OK'
You should now be connected
If the device is working correctly, there should be an active 'Signal Strength' indicator showing a number of bars in green. If the device says 'Searching' it is probably working, but cannot locate a signal from the phone towers. There are three usual states under which the device/connection software operates, 'Not Connected','Connecting' and 'Connected'. If you are receiving a message other than one of these three, something probably went wrong with the set up, the device or the sim. Review the above procedure and take note of any anomylous errors. You should also disable any other LAN or Wireless adapters through the Windows Control Panel to avoid the system attempting to connect through a different device.
PROBLEMS WITH STANDBY
I have struck a problem where the laptop has dropped into standby. On resuming, I have connected the Bigpond device, but internet connection is unavailable. In all cases there has been no 'IP Address' showing after connection in the 'Bigpond Connection Manager'(Need to click 'Details' button to see this). Disconnecting and Reconnecting does not seem to resolve this matter. The resolution I have found is to exit out of the 'Bigpond Connection Manager' software completely (Make sure the icon has gone from the Taskbar/System Tray), unplug the dongle from the computer for about 5-10 seconds, then replug the device and restart the 'Bigpond Connection Manager'. Reconnect and all is usually fine.
PROBLEMS WITH SIM LOCKED
If the 'Bigpond Connection Manager' advises 'Sim Locked' you will need to remove the sim from the device and place it temporarily in a 3G mobile phone. Navigate through the phone menu to remove the 'Sim Pin Security' and save the setting. Place the Sim back into the device and try again. If you don't have a 3G mobile phone (I don't) take the Sim back to the place of purchase and ask them to remove the Sim Pin for you. Alternatively, on the 'Diagnosis' tab of the 'Bigpond Connection Manager' there is a box where you may enter the 'SIM PIN'. This may work also, but as I do not have a 3G phone and my Sim Pin has been removed as previously described, I have not tested this.
